Today, the Greek community of St. Petersburg held a memorial service in honor of the hero Simos Panagiotidis. Below is the speech given by the chairman of our society after the memorial service:
Dear friend,
I will speak to you in Greek, because it is in this language that we have had long conversations together.
Today, we stand here with heavy hearts, trying to bear the unbearable weight of your loss. You fell defending the ideals, honor, security, and future of Russia, honoring the land you loved so much, leaving behind your family, wife, five children, friends, colleagues, and all who loved and admired you. Above all, I, your friend who always sought your counsel.
You were fearless. No matter the task or risk, you were always at the forefront. You never remained a bystander in situations that required courage. You were always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, generously offering your strength, kindness, and experience. Each of us has forever gained a piece of your heart because there was always room for all of us in yours.
As a successful businessman, you showed that strength and determination are not only traits of a warrior but also of a person who builds, creates, and cares. You brought confidence and stability not only to your family but also to those who worked alongside you and shared in your success. A brave commander and a true example of leadership, you led by example not only through commands but also by your very presence.
You were, are, and will always be the pride of the Greek community in St. Petersburg—a true Greek of the diaspora who kept the flame of the Greek spirit alive. You inspire us and will continue to inspire us because through you our bond with one another has grown even stronger. It is both a great honor and an even greater responsibility for us to continue what you started.
Your sacrifice is invaluable and leaves a void that cannot be filled. This is not just the loss of a friend, father, husband, leader—this is the loss of a person who was all these things and more. You will live on in us because how you loved life, loved Russia and Greece, how you defended and supported will never be forgotten.
You left behind a family ready to bear the burden of loss and continue along the path you paved. Your grieving wife has lost her anchor—the man who loved her with all his heart and protected her. Your children each carry within them a part of your soul and strength. Your eldest son, Arseniy, who serves on the front lines continuing your work, knowing that you watch over him from Heaven with pride. Your sons Pavel and Mikhail continue your legacy with pride and gratitude for all that you taught them. An exemplary family—a beacon of strength and unity—that will continue to preserve your memory and legacy.
I personally and all the Greek Society of St. Petersburg will always be there for you, ready to offer any help and support that may be needed. This is our duty to you and your loved ones.
It is a great happiness that we were fortunate enough to live at the same time as such a hero! And no matter how hard I try or what I say, it will never be enough.
My dear friend Simo! May eternal glory be with you.
Immortal.
